February 2012
Appalachian Trail at Michaux State Forest
Steve, Matt, and Chris
Highlights:
  • The Temps were comfortable. And it was a relatively easy hike.
  • Had lunch next to a beautiful lake.
  • The first night's fire was a bust, went down early.
  • Got 4 inches of snow on Friday night. Awesome hiking.
  • Last night we slept in a shelter and shared it with some "over the hill" guys who've been doing the same thing we've been doing for  30 years. They brought a cooler of food and drinks. Good guys, good conversations.

Winter 2010 (very last day of winter)
AT
Matt and Tucker

Highlights:
  • Just a quick one nighter with the pup. It was the last official day of winter (keeping the tradition alive). Packed in from 309 heading south. It was a relaxing trip with a fuzzy friend.
December 2008
Old Loggers Path
Josh, Nate, Matt

Highlights:
  • Not really a Highlight, but it was wet and cold.
  • Nate brought a handle of Maker's Mark but we were never able to drink it because we couldn't get the wax coating off.
  • A tree stole nates sleeping bag right off his pack.
  • Due to poor conditions and potential hypothermia, we found a cut through and left a day early.

January 2014
Black Forest Trail (revisited)

Highlights:
  • Park at Slate Run and camp at the trail head behind the Manor Hotel and Restaurant (This is after we hike up the ice sheet of a road where a truck was abandoned, and bushwack down the side of a hill towards the river just to walk back up and find the trail head). Set up tent at 1230am.
  • Have to hike around the town because the river crossing bridge was missing.
  • Awesome Vistas!
  • Get to first camp site around 4pm, only to find a "No camping sign". Decide to hike an additional 2.5 miles to alternate spot.....on ice sheet road.
  • Had to bushwack down another hillside because we missed a trail head (this is where Steve lost the map).
  • Had a lame fire but got 3 inches of snow overnight.
  • The day of days.....hiked perhaps the most difficult and dangerous hike to date. Straight up a frozen hillside. Crawled, hung, prayed. We actually had to use ropes to get out of some tight spots.
  • Got to second camp spot....but it was lame (car camping). Had a nasty river crossing too.
  • Decided to hike another 2 miles back into town. Got some hot food and drove home late Saturday night.

2010
Loyalsock Trail
Loyalsock State Forest/World's End State Park

Chris hurt his knee and hitched a ride back to the camp from the park.

porcupine

We decided to drive back a day early rather than camping next to the car one more night. We stopped at a cruddy restaruant for some even more cruddy pizza. We got home early and surprised the wifes who were having a girls night.

2008
Black Forest Trail
Tiadaghton State Forest
Josh, Chris, Matt, Steve
The highlights:

  • Josh brought the wrong maps. We didn't realize it until we were 3.5 hours into the drive.
  • Late night arrival couldn't find the trail head in the dark....using flashlights out the windows to help. Heavy snow.
  • -6 degrees before the windchill - instafreeze! Heard coyotes (chris brings beef stick into the tent...until he is kicked out)
  • Steve is a walking backpack! All you can see are two little feet from behind his pack.
  • Matt gets his official trail name Scotch Rocket.
  • Tower fire up on the mountain in the snow.
  • Steve finds the best toilet spot on the second night, in clear eye shot from the campfire.
